Lara VIC, Conserving, documenting and re-housing a Boer War Flag

Description - A large flag, consisting of approximately 31 red, navy blue dyed and natural linen panels, sewn together to form the Union Jack. The heading is sewn together with strong canvas. A thick plant fibre cord is threaded through the heading to form a loop for a snap-hook at the top of the heading. The cord is left loose from the bottom of the heading to form the halyard. The makers, “W. LIBBY & SON-GEELONG” are stamped on the top front surface and the back, bottom surface of the heading. “LARA RSL” is handwritten on the top, back surface of the heading.

Condition – Extensive fading was identified throughout, particularly at the centre of the flag. This resulted in colour change, embrittlement and fracture; the fibres were desiccated and fragmenting. Past repairs were evident, where patches of mis-matched fabric were used to conceal holes. This had unfortunately, caused mechanical damage where heavier fabric and stitching was pulling on the more fragile textile. Fraying was evident at the top right and bottom right of the fly end. Insect grazing was also evident throughout. The natural coloured panels had darkened, which is attributable to UV exposure. There is dimensional change throughout the flag, most visible in sagging and dimensional change about the lower half.

What we did – Firstly, we brush vacuumed the surface with a soft bristle brush to remove dry dirt and dust. Soiling was then reduced from the front and back surfaces using a dirt eraser. We then reduced the severe creasing in the centre of the flag, using a combination of weighted flattening and localised humidification. The centre was stabilised with silk crepeline, impregnated with thermoplastic, conservation-grade adhesive and the frayed corners were supported with colour-matched fabric. A customised backing support was constructed and lined with a cotton/linen blend fabric. We then stitch-mounted the flag onto the customised backing. Lastly, a customised frame, in satin black, with a 2.5cm spacer and 3mm Tru-Vue UV filtering acrylic glazing, was added, then backed with 5mm acid-free fomecore, a brace and vertical D-rings.
